Are you a coffee drinker? I wasn’t until very recently. I never really liked the taste and a few times after trying it for the first time, I even felt a bit sick afterwards. Needless to say, coffee was never my favorite, I rather stuck to tea instead. But in past year or so I started drinking more coffee. What changed and why do I enjoy a cup of joe every once in a while?

Why I started drinking coffee
Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not as if I never drank coffee, but I wouldn’t touch a cup of straight up black coffee with a ten foot pole. My only coffee intake consisted of Starbucks’ Caramel Machiatto and as a friend pointed out to me: that has very little to do with actual coffee. But now I enjoy a cup of real, actual straight up black coffee. Here’s why!
I found coffee I like. At work and also at home, I now have access to better coffee machines and to me that has made all the difference. At work they installed barista style coffee machines last year and at home I have a Nespresso machine. The result: better, fresher coffee that is much most tasty. Who’d have thought that all these years I’d just been a coffee snob?
I sometimes need the caffeine. More so than previously, I sometimes need a coffee to start me up or to keep me going. This is why, if I drink coffee, I mostly drink it at work. I will never drink too much, just one or two cups a day, but it’s sometimes just what I need to kickstart my day or to ensure I can keep going for one more hour.
It’s a great way to unwind. This may sound odd, but I’ve also been drinking more coffee after a workout. I find it helps better with getting down from the adrenaline high after a workout than tea and I appreciate the flavor even more it seems. Plus it makes for a great part of the socializing after said workout.
I enjoy the flavor. Something I never thought I’d say, but it’s true, I’ve actually started to enjoy the rich, nutty flavor of coffee. Would I pick it over tea? That depends on my mood, but I’ve recently also gotten more into black teas over minty and herbal ones. I think it may also just be a change in my palate, which has happened to me before (hello there orange juice!).
The only downside to drinking coffee for me is that it is not as hydrating as drinking tea. I feel that if I drink coffee, I also have to drink a lot more water, which is why I try to keep it to a minimum. So I still mostly drink tea, but on the moments I fancy a cup of coffee or if I need that little pick me up, I most certainly will.
