Charlotte Tilbury Magic Red lipstick review

You can have red lipsticks or you can have the Charlotte Tilbury red lipsticks. I used to own a few, but Red Carpet Red has been a favorite for years. When I came across Magic Red I thought it might be pretty too: described as a deep red I was very intrigued. It ended up not being the PERFECT dark red lip for me, but it was a pretty shade nonetheless. So let’s have a closer look.

Sadly as I went to link this lipstick, I found out it no longer exists as the shade was limited edition, but it was stunner anyways. So I still wanted to review it. It is part of the Matte Revolution range which is my favorite by Charlotte Tilbury. It is longwearing, yet still very comfortable on the lips, which is excellent for such a dark lipstick shade. Magic Red was a beautiful shade that went really well with this formula.

Review: Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Magic Red lipstick

One thing I have to say is that Charlotte Tilbury lipsticks aren’t cheap. At €37 a piece they have also gone up quite a bit in price. You do get lots of value for money though. They have good preservatives in and I like the squared off bullet which makes for very easy application. The shade of the bullet is unique and means you can get a precise application without a lip liner, but the brand also sells lots of accompanying lip liner shades to go with your lipsticks.

What does this lipstick have to offer?

Magic Red was a limited edition shade that came in beautiful red packaging. I have to say I may have been drawn in more by the packaging than the lipstick shade itself. I happen to have plenty of red lipsticks, so it’s not as if I wasn’t spoiled for choice already. In the bullet I feel the lipstick looks darker than once it goes onto the lips and once on the lips it was also too similar to some other shades of red I already owned. So for me it was an easy declutter.

What does this look like in a swatch?

You can clearly see the texture here: a fully pigmented, deeper blue toned red. It has a slight sheen, but on the lipstick I feel that sheen is a bit stronger. On my lipstick it looks even more blue toned (see below). The brand is currently selling a shade called Hollywood Vixen that also comes in red packaging that I feel looks quite a lot like Magic Red! So if you were looking to buy a shade like this, it may be worth looking into this new shade.

What does it look like on the lips?

My issue when I was looking for good deep red lipsticks that none of them were deep enough for me. Not that there aren’t any deep red lipsticks, but often brands will add so much blue that on me they pulled more berry. Paired with my skin tone Magic Red turned a slight raspberry shade, rather than the deep red I had expected. Stunning? Yes, but also a bit brighter than I had hoped.

Should you purchase a Charlotte Tilbury lipstick?

I still rate the Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution lipsticks. While I don’t wear them as often anymore, I still think the brand has some lovely things to offer. From the great reds, innovative bullet to some stunning nudes: if you can find your shade you will be able to find some great lipsticks. So if you are looking to splurge on a luxury lipstick, then Charlotte Tilbury may be a good deal afterall.
