MAC lipsticks have been a favorite currently and I had two lipsticks that I got through Back 2 MAC (the final two!) that I hadn’t yet reviewed. So now that my love for MAC lipsticks has been rekindled, I figured I could review some of the newer bits I got in. Today we are taking a closer look at New York Apple (frost) and Verve (satin).
As I mentioned I got these for free through Back 2 MAC, this was a programme MAC used to offer where you could exchange old MAC products or empty packaging for new products. I was only ever able to exchange it for lipsticks and so I did right before they discontinued the programme. As far as I can tell, Verve is no longer for sale, but New York Apple still very much is. A frosty red and a brown lipstick? Yes, I decided to go wild with these choices and go for something I wouldn’t buy easily with my own money. And guess what?! They are actually quite pretty on too!
Review: MAC Lipstick in New York Apple (frost) & Verve (discontinued)
As of late MAC has been revamping their lipstick ranges for the past year or so. These are still in the old packaging as I have owned them for a bit but as I was focusing on getting more use out of other lipsticks I had nearly forgotten I even had these. But then my recent MAC video reminded me how good these are, so I had to feature them here. At €27 a pop, these MAC lipsticks aren’t cheap (I remember them being under €20!) and they are available from every place that sells and stocks MAC.
What do these lipsticks have to offer?
Here is the closeup for New York Apple and below you can see Verve in all it’s glory. MAC lipsticks are some of the best in the game. The selection of shades and finishes means you can usually find something you like no matter who you are. I have had MAC lipsticks as part of my collection since I started wearing makeup. So these are a staple for me and I have loved them for years. These shades are a little less iconic, but both are very pretty on!
What is the formula like?
MAC still has that quintessential touch of vanilla scent to their lipsticks (yes, even in the new range) which I have always found quite pleasant. It’s just enough to mask the scent of the ingredients, but not so strong that you smell it all day. MAC lipsticks are easy to apply and I have had no issues with them expiring quickly. I had some of my original MAC lipsticks for more than a decade and they were still good to go. Not all shades I had then are still available, but some shades have also been renamed. So it may be worth going into store and have a little swatchfest if you were interested in buying a MAC lipstick.
How do these lipsticks swatch?
You can clearly see the difference in the finishes here. Verve is a satin with more pigmentation and a creamy finish. New York Apple is a frost with sheer pigmentation and some pearly shine. I was unsure about the frost finish when I got these, but it was a formula I had never tried by MAC and I can report that it is just as comfortable and longwearing as their other lipsticks are.
What do these lipsticks look like on the lips?
On the lips you can see that both are easy to build up. You can apply the frost lipstick in New York Apple sheer or you can build it up like I did here (bottom picture). It is a very pretty, soft red shade. Verve is the most out there for me. It is described as a plummy brown and that is exactly why it works. Most browns are far too yellow on me, but this has a hint of coolness which is why I can pull it off. With lip liner it is even more stunning.
Should you buy MAC lipsticks?
Sadly, Verve is no longer available but New York Apple still is. Verve is such a good one for me as it has a great undertone. New York Apple is a stunning red. Both have the longlasting MAC formula I have come to love so these easily stay put until lunch. For a perfect look you may have to do a touch up in between, but I usually just smush what is left back in with a finger and that sees me through. Lovely lipsticks in unexpected shades and finishes that still work. Here’s your reminder that it is okay to be more adventurous with your lipstick choices.
