Essence Silky Blur primer review

You know I have to try it when Essence or Catrice come out with a new product. Their primers are usually some of their stand out products of any line. But is that also the case for the first big launch of 2025? I already reviewed the Catrice Glam in Gold which didn’t become a favorite. Will the Silky Blur Poreless primer do any better? That’s what we are here to find out.

One of the reasons why I usually love the Essence and Catrice primers is because they are just that good. They are cheap, cheerful and get the job done and they are just as good and sometimes even better than higher end primers. Because primers aren’t a necessary step in your makeup routine if you have a good skincare regime. So this is an extra step that I don’t want to spend too much money on. So let’s see whether this Essence primer is worth it.

Review: Essence Silky Blur Poreless primer

For the price you never have to doubt an Essence purpose. They are still one of the most affordable makeup brands on the market with many products under €5. The Silky Blur primer is no different. At just €3.95 this is an absolute steal if it works. This seems to be a no frills primer that is meant to blur your pores and make your makeup last longer but without the heavy feeling.

What does this primer have to offer?

My main reason for wanting to try this is the promise: a silky smooth primer that is lightweight, minimizes pores and still doesn’t dry out the skin. It contains niacinamide (my favorite skincare ingredient) and it therefore combines a primer with skincare properties. That usually means it will be my favorite. This is meant to enhance the longevity of your makeup and the clear shade means it goes with all skin tones.

For a primer that says it will minimize pores and called silky, I was surprised how hydrating this felt. It goes on smoothly and feels very pleasant on the skin. This does have some fragrance in which may be a make or break for some people. While this feels great going on, it sets down instantly and makes my skin feel a bit tight. It never feels heavy though, but I feel it doesn’t add much to my skin. I don’t see a great pore minimizing effect, nor does the hydration last beyond the first moments of application.

Would you believe me if I said the picture on the left is the before and the picture on the right is the after? So yes, on the picture on the right I am wearing the primer with no other makeup done. My skin hasn’t been looking great lately: lots of redness and dark spots and so this primer doesn’t have any effect on that. The blurring isn’t that noticeable and I feel this goes on like a film on top of your skin, but that doesn’t feel great on my dry/ dehydrating skin. For oily skin this may be great, but this isn’t for me. Does it make my makeup last? Yes, but I have more comfortable primers that I just prefer more that do the same thing.

Should you buy the Essence Silky Blur primer?

Despite this product not being my favorite, I would still recommend this. If you have oily skin and you want an affordable primer that is going to help with oil control while not stripping your skin and even being a bit more hydrating this is for you. If you have dry skin I would stay away. This just doesn’t feel great. It sits well under makeup for sure, but after a full day of wear my skin looks extra dry which isn’t a good look.
