In the previous collection update Essence already released the Drop of Sunshine Bronzing Drops, which weren’t my favorite. They were too deep, warm and orange looking on my skin and it really wasn’t my cup of tea. So when the brand launched another Drop of Sunshine product, but this time highlighting drops, I was skeptical to say the least. But I am happy to report that I like this a lot better than I did the other one.
This sadly only comes in one shade, which is a shame because I think a lot of people would love a product like this. It was one of the reasons I wasn’t wowed by the bronzing drops either: this will only work for a handful of people. Meant to be used by itself, underneath or as a mix in with your makeup this can be such a versatile product. But There should be at least five more shades to make that work.
Review: Essence Drop of Sunshine highlighter drops
We can of course all tell what this product is inspired by. Brands like Drunk Elephant and ELF have been doing highlighting and bronzing drops for some time now, but Essence is by far the most affordable rendition of this type of product. At just €3.95 this is an absolute steal. It is out now for in many countries, but it may still be coming to other places.
What does this product have to offer?
This comes in a handy bottle that allows you to easily control how much product comes out. The shade looks quite orange and warm toned when it is applied full on but as you can see below, once sheered out the product has a beautiful sheen. This product is meant to give you that extra dewy look. It should add shine, contains skincare ingredients and just give you a natural glow. It can be used under, over or mixed in with other products such as skincare or makeup. You can use it by itself or can be used in combination with other products as well.
What does this look like in a swatch?
As you can see in the swatch, it is when you sheer this out when the true beauty of this highlighter comes through. The shine is far more cool toned and this does have a transparent base. So this doesn’t mess up any products underneath and it settles down easily so once applied this will not budge all day. It doesn’t have much as a base, so I would not recommend using this all over your face by itself but it can be beautiful mixed in with a moisturizer or foundation.
What does this look like on the cheeks?
I have found I love applying this as is: on the high points of my cheeks on top of makeup. So like a classic highlighter. This has a beautiful glow. The shade isn’t anything special, but it can be great for applying a glass like finish to the skin and I love how natural this looks. It is very easy to apply: just shake it up and apply to the back of your hand. Then pick it up with fingers and tap it on where you want it to go. This is a great product for a summer travel makeup bag.
Should you buy the Essence highlighting drops?
These Drop of Sunshine highlighting drops by Essence are a beautiful new product from the brand. Where I didn’t love the bronzing drops as they weren’t the right shade for me, these highlighting drops are spot on. They add shine, are longlasting and give a beautiful natural glow that I just love. Essence has hit the nail on the head with this one.
