Essence Foundation Stick review

Did you know that Essence has launched a new foundation stick for Spring/ Summer 2025? Well now you do! This product is being rolled out as we speak and I wanted to test it out straight away. I wasn’t very hopeful though as I have dry skin and my experience with foundation sticks isn’t the best. The only one I have ever tried that I remotely enjoyed was the Hourglass Vanish Stick. Will I like this as much as I did that?

There is one this that is great about this product: it comes in over 40 shades. That’s right over 40 shades that come in different undertones AND that don’t stop at a medium to deep skin. For Essence that is huge. There is only one downside: not all shades will be available in store. You will have to go online to find the full range. I bought shade 070 as it seemed to be closest to my skin tone from the shades that were in stock when I bought the products.

Review: Essence Foundation Stick 070

You can say what you want about Essence but if there is one makeup brand that is still killing it with their affordability it is this one. At just €4.99 this is a great price if the product is good. The packaging feels a bit cheap. But what can you expect for such a low price point and with such an extensive shade range. This is now out in the EU from most retailers that stock Essence. However, since this is brand new, it may take some time for it to make its way across the world.

What does this product have to offer?

When I bought this I wasn’t sure I would be loving this. As I have quite dry skin, most foundation sticks just make it look extra dry. However, Essence claims this will give a natural look. It should have a creamy formula that blends easily. It has a natural matte finish, but it should be lightweight. It is multi-purpose stick that allows you to do quick touch ups, bronze or highlight the face (depending on the shade you get) AND it can be used as foundation. It has skincare grade ingredients and coverage is light to medium.

What does this look like on the face?

So first things first, the shade isn’t too bad. Is it more yellow than I had hoped? Yes. 070 is described as great for light skin with a neutral/ peach undertone. Since I am in between warm and cool I though it might be a match. And while I can get away with the shade, especially when I do the rest of my make up, it isn’t the best match. This is best applied straight from the stick and blended in with fingers or a brush.

What is the coverage like?

For a foundation stick I don’t think this is as much coverage as you might expect. Granted, I went in with a thin layer, because I feel this can be a little bit touch to blend sometimes. I would therefore say this is a light to medium buildable coverage. And blended out, this actually looks very pretty. It lasts all day and doesn’t attach itself to any dry patches. It feels comfortable and non-heavy and it doesn’t necessarily need a powder to settle down.

Should you buy the Essence foundation stick?

This product pleasantly surprised me. I don’t love foundation sticks, but this was a good one as far as foundation sticks go. Is this my new favorite foundation? No. Because I just think I have better things that are easier to use for me. But for a quick touch up or on the go I can see myself using this from time to time. The creamy formula means it is actually quite hydrating and if the packaging didn’t feel as cheap you would think this product would cost more than the mere €4.99 it goes for.
