Essence sometimes has the craziest launches. Crazy and crazy unnecessary. Because who needs a primer for their under eye area? Nobody does. But that doesn’t mean they cannot simply try it of course. So let’s review the Jelly Grip Under Eye primer.

This release is part of the new Essence drop for fall/ winter 2024. The full size face primer from the same line is one of my favorites by the brand. So I was curious to see if this was any different or not. Let’s have a closer look.
Review: Essence Jelly Grip Undereye Primer
This under eye primer costs only €3.49. It is available now from all retailers that stock Essence at least in the EU. This feels and looks similar to other under eye sticks they made before: the Hydro Hero and the Under Eye Brightener. I feel all three are just slight variations on a similar concept.
What does this have to offer?

This product is meant to prevent you concealer on the under eye area from creasing. It is a clear stick that should be easy to apply. It should hydrate the under eye area and also have a fresh feeling. Additionally this should make your concealer blend more easily and make it apply more seamlessly.
What does this swatch like?

As you can see this is a very thin formula. You could easily achieve a similar effect by using an eyeshadow primer. So you definitely don’t need this clear, transparent stick version in very cheap packaging. That said, the product does do what it was made to do. Apply this and your concealer will crease less and last better throughout the day.
What does this look like on the face?

Because this is a clear product this isn’t a very noticeable product on the face. You can see a bit more shine on my under eye area, but that’s all this pretty much does. This isn’t hydrating enough to replace an actual eye cream but for a quick touch up it can be nice. The stick is a bit of an awkward size to fit onto the under eye area. So I prefer to just dab it on with my fingers.
Should you buy the Essence Jelly Grip under eye primer?

While this product does what it promises to do, it is of course a useless product. Use good skincare, apply a bit of extra face primer on the under eye or just apply a bit more eyeshadow primer and you will have three products already in your home that will give the same effect that this does. So while nice, I really don’t think we need this in our lives.
