The minute this product was announced I was sure that this would sell out immediately. Why? Because the Essence Drop of Sunshine bronzing drops look like they could be an exact dupe of the Drunk Elephant D-Bronze sunshine drops. Of course we already got a dupe by ELF, but this Essence version costs about a third of that. So a dupe of a dupe? Let’s find out if it is any good.
So I have to preface this blog post review by saying that I have tried neither the Drunk Elephant nor the ELF version of this product. In fact, most liquid bronzers and bronzing drops end up being not great for me as my fair skin and bronzers can be a bit difficult to find a good match. So my expectations with this were: too warm toned and too intense for what I need. But is that really the case or are these surprisingly fair skin friendly? Let’s find out.
Review: Essence Drop of Sunshine Bronzing Drops liquid bronzer
I already mentioned these being even cheaper than the ELF version. The ELF version retails from anywhere from €12 to €14 where I live. The Essence version? Just €3.95. Whereas the Drunk Elephant version is €39. So the ELF is under half the Drunk Elephant price point but Essence is even less than half of the ELF. That makes this an absolute steal.
What does this have to offer?
This runny, watery substance is not just a liquid bronzer: this is a multi-use versatile product that should help to get you that sunkissed glow no matter the season. It can be blended into a foundation or moisturizer for adding a tint to the skin or you could use it in more targeted areas as well. This is a lightweight formula that should blend easily and Essence claims this will for for any skin tone.
What does this swatch like?
So while Essence may claim this is right for everyone on my skin it looks oompaloompa orange. Not a good look. And where it may work for some people, it is definitely too light for anyone deeper than a light to medium skin tone.
For me, this isn’t only too orange which means that if I apply it all over I end up looking like I ate too many carrots on a good day, but it is also a tad too glowy. However, I can easily counteract both effects by using this in the areas where I would normally apply bronzer and than it is actually quite pretty on.
What does this look like on the face?
So while I cannot use this all over the face as a mix in for foundations or moisturizer (it looks crazy!) I do use it like I normally would any liquid bronzer and that works. This sheers out beautifully, is easy to apply and blends into the skin to the point where it is undetectable.
It creates a very soft bronze look and where it looks orange when applied all over, it looks far more natural in more targeted areas and applied with a brush. I do think it kind of breaks up my foundation so this is probably best used UNDER foundation to avoid that sort of issue.
Should you buy the Essence Drop of Sunshine bronzing drops?
I think this is a stunning product and I can understand why this is currently sold out almost everywhere. With just one shade available though, this isn’t the most inclusive in terms of shade, but with a bit of creativity I think it can work for many more poeople than you might iniatially expect.
This is a great one for lazy makeup days where you just want to add a healthy glow to the face in targeted areas and maybe where little to no foundation. I will certainly be keeping this in my makeup collection for a little while to come because as far as a liquid bronzer goes this actually is one the best ones I own.
