If you are familiar with Charlotte Tilbury, you will know that their makeup skews very warm toned. While that works for 75% of the population, this is not the case if you have a cool undertone. That is why I like testing products out to see if they can work on fair skin with a cool leaning undertone. Today’s test is for the Charlotte Tilbury Secret Salma lipstick. Will it work on fair skin?
The last time I bought a Charlotte Tilbury lipstick? Years. In terms of high end lipsticks I have definitely found new favorites. Secret Salma, no matter how pretty it is, is one I no longer even own anymore. It just didn’t stand out in my makeup collection enough. The shade is pretty though and the Charlotte Tilbury formula is a great one. I think the lipsticks are some of the best products the brand has to offer.
Review: Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips Secret Salma
If there is one brand that you can find everywhere, it is Charlotte Tilbury. The brand is everywhere! In every department store, every city and seemingly in every country you can find a Charlotte Tilbury counter. Online they are also easy to find and their official website ships internationally. What is less accessible about the brand is their price point: at €36 this lipstick is on the higher end of the makeup price point.
What does this lipstick have to offer?
Secret Salma is described as a lipstick with a rosy plum shade. I would agree to that, but to me it reminds me too much of something my grandma would wear. It is for sure the coolest toned lipstick by Charlotte Tilbury I have tried. It is part of the Hot Lips collection which consists of 10 shades in total. The Hot Lips are all created with celebrities in mind. This one was created for actress Salma Hayek.
This lipstick has a matte finish making it part of the Matte Revolution line. It is a deeper shade that is essentially a rosy shade with a hint of purple to it. This shade is recommended to be used if you have brown eyes. The lipstick features some skincare ingredients that should help hydrate the lips while giving you intense color payoff.
What does this look like in a swatch?
What stands out about this shade is the pretty rosy shade. It definitely has a deeper undertone so great if you have medium to deep skin. While I am fair skinned, I prefer a deeper shade very often as I have a more pigmented lip myself.
Formula wise this works well. It is a touch dry when you first use it. However, that disappears when it warms up and you get a smooth, flawless looking swatch and application. One swipe and you are done. One thing I love about Charlotte Tilbury lipsticks is how well they wear. These lipsticks are great if you want a lipstick that can survive an 8-hour workday without any issues.
What does this look like on the lips?
This is what Secret Salma looks like on my lips. It is a pretty shade at first glance, but compared to other things in my collection not that unique AND just not as wearable as I had thought. My main reason for decluttering this lipstick in the end was pretty simple: I wasn’t wearing it. Yes it looks wearable and like a great shade, but I just found this wasn’t a great match with blushes and makeup looks I like wearing.
Should you buy Charlotte Tilbury Secret Salma lipstick?
Of course we need to assess whether this lipstick is worth the money. I would say it is, if you think of this as a lipstick you will be wearing everyday. If you are not likely to wear this shade on the daily: skip it. Yes it is pretty. Yes the formula is amazing. However, the slight warmth of this shade is what is putting me off.
Overall, I really still enjoy the Charlotte Tilbury matte revolution lipstick formula. However that doesn’t mean I need to hang onto every shade. As lovely as this is, I have pretty much replaced all my high end lipsticks with other brands by now. So I have hung onto my favorites and this one wasn’t that.
