A niche fragrance brand I really wanted to try was Byredo. Mojave Ghost was the fragrance that appealed to me most, but after trying a sample I found it didn’t last very long on my skin. Rather than commit to buying a full size bottle I discovered the brand does some smaller sets. So I bought La Sélection Boisée to give it more of a try and guess what: Mojave Ghost did not end up being my favorite fragrance in the set.

The Byredo La Sélection Boisée Eau de Parfum features travel sizes of three of their woodsy fragrances. It features: Black Saffron, Mojave Ghost and Super Cedar. They do another set that is more floral but those fragrances didn’t appeal to me. It is much cheaper than buying a full size but the set has gone up in price tremendously ever since I bought it.
Perfume review: Byredo La Sélection Boisée Eau de Parfum Black Saffron, Mojave Ghost, Super Cedar
At €129 this set isn’t as good of a deal as it was just 2 years ago when I first started looking into it. When I first found these in Paris, they retailed for around 80 – 90 euros. Now they have gone up quite a lot in price so whether you will find this worth it will depend totally on your budget and what you like spending on fragrance. Since you can buy these fragrances separately I will be reviewing each one individually.
Byredo Black Saffron

We are kicking things off with my favorite in the selection. Black Saffron is the one that lasts best and smells best on me. This features the following scent notes according to fragrantica:
- Top: saffron, juniper berries, chinese grapefruit
- Middle: leather, black violet
- Base: raspberry, cashmeran, vetiver
I am normally not a huge fan of vetiver but in this one it works. On me this smells like a warm hug and I find it a very comforting fragrance. Not as earthy as many woodsy scents can go and more unique for my personal fragrance collection as many of my woodsy scents have a musk base note.
Mojave Ghost

The fragrance that from its description sounded best to me was Mojave Ghost, but sadly it wasn’t just the tester that I stopped smelling almost instantly. Also this travel size disappears within an hour. Great as a ‘sleep scent’ or quick pick me up but not a day time or date time perfume for me.
- Top: sapodilla, ambrette
- Middle: magnolia, violet, sandalwood
- Base: ambergris, cedar
This is very pretty fragrance though. It smells soft and slightly floral but in a fresh way. I think it’s the lightnes and freshness of this fragrance that just makes it disappear on me. I tend to prefer a stronger scent profile for myself.
Super Cedar

The final fragrance in the set is Super Cedar. One that again I thought I’d like on paper. This is definitely the most woodsy scent of the three and I like that but I feel it smells to close to pine scented air freshner on me.
- Top: rose
- Middle: virginian cedar
- Base: haitian vetiver, musk
While this smells very fresh as well, I just don’t think this gels well with my body chemistry. It starts off smelling strong and overpowering but quickly mutes down. It smells pleasantly enough but not to the point where I would want to own this again.
The verdict
I am glad I decided to only buy the travel size of these Byredo fragrances. While I like them, I also find them a bit too subtle for my liking. I am therefore glad I got to try them, but will not be committing to a full size myself. For the price point these go for I would certainly want to get a little bit more out of my fragrance in terms of fragrance profile and longevity.
