Trend It Up Hydro Stay foundation review

Can the German drugstore do good foundations? Why don’t we review one to find out. Many brands available at the German drugstore are also available in The Netherlands, but German drugstore DM has a line we don’t get: Trend It Up. Their Hydro Stay Silky Serum foundation looked interesting so let’s give it a whirl.

As with many drugstore brands the shade range isn’t the best. This only comes in 5 shades and 005 is the lightest one they do. There are no deep shades available at all: everything seems to be a light to medium shade that looks fairly yellow. However, I love a hydrating foundation so I thought I might like the formula.

Review: Trend !t Up Hydro Stay Silky Serum foundation 005

This is super affordable: at only €4.95 at the German drugstore this is an absolute steal if it is any good. Trend It Up as a brand looks very similar to Essence and Catrice: in the way their presence looks in stores and also the products. Lots of it looks like discontinued Essence and Catrice products, but this brand is unique to DM so I am not sure if they are owned by the same company or not.

What does this foundation have to offer?

This foundation is described as being longlasting, great for all skin types and buildable in coverage. It contains hyaluronic acid and some vitamins to ensure it looks natural on the skin. It has an SPF of 15, should blur imperfections and be waterproof. The packaging has a weird dropper and the cap feels a bit cheap and nearly broke on me as it has a rip in it from screwing it on too tightly.

There were some testers in store and what impressed me about this was the formula. From the description I would have thought this would be a more mattifying foundation but it is more glowy and skin tint like. It’s definitely got a light coverage. I don’t see how anyone would want to build this up as the formula will simply slide around. I feel it does just enough to cover up my redness as you can see below.

To show you the coverage, here’s a before and after. You can clearly see that is has decent coverage but not too much. Once applied to the face it’s a little less glowy than in the swatch but it’s not super matte either. I would therefore describe the finish as a satin. It wore quite well throughout the day too and it never felt heavy or cakey. What I don’t love? The shade match.

You can see very clearly here that the shade match just isn’t great. This is the lightest one available (005) and while I can get away with it, this is pushing it, even for me. It’s mainly too yellow, but it is also a touch too dark. Nothing a bit of bronzer can’t fix, but I feel it just doesn’t look great overall and I really have to blend this down my neck as well.

Should you buy the Trend It Up Hydro Stay foundation?

That depends on a number of things? Are you travelling to Germany any time soon? Because if the answer is no this may be a bit difficult to find. Of course if you live in Germany this may be worth checking out as the formula is a really good one. Basic, yes, but it’s a solid foundation pick for sure.

However, the second reason why I won’t just blindly recommend this to you is the shade range. Having only 5 shades is meagre, especially in 2024. So the brand should do better. Since it’s drugstore I don’t expect much but a few lighter and definitely at least 5 more shades to cater to deeper skin tones are a must if this wants to get any traction. If you can find your shade: go for it. If not, it will not be worth the 5 euros this goes for.
