Jones Road What the Foundation review

Do remember the hype for this one? When this product launched it was everywhere, but with no opportunity for me to buy it, I had written it off as I something I could try. But then I found Jones Road at Liberty in London and decided to try a few products.

The hype for this product got started because of a by now infamous review by Meredith Duxbury who applied so much product (something she is known to do) and making it look absolutely ridiculous. I also think that this product is greatly misunderstoond in the beauty sphere but I’ll get to that in a second. Let’s talk price point first.

Review: Jones Road What the Foundation Moisture Tint in Porcelain

Jones Road is a brand created by Bobbi Brown. Yes, that Bobbi Brown. It was first only available online, but buy now you can get it in physical stores as well. I found it in Liberty London but I don’t know where else you can buy this apart from the official website that doesn’t ship internationally. So this may be hard to find. At €45 it is also not a cheap product.

What does this product have to offer?

The What the Foundation is a foundation and yet again it is not. It comes in a jar and the texture gives me the ick just looking at it. It is quite thick and looks like a skin-colored moisturizer. That’s also how it feels on the skin: like a moisturizer and not like makeup.

And that is exactly the intention of this product and this brand: to give you makeup like products that feel like skincare and create an effortless, natural, barely there look. This is not meant to go on full coverage, but to simply make you look your best. It has glow and makes your skin look very dewy.

What does this product swatch like?

As this product comes in a jar, I like to use this with a spatula to prevent my fingers from going into the jar time and time again. It’s just a bit more hygienic and can help with keeping the product stable of over time.

I bought this in the lightest shade available: Porcelain, which is light enough but also too yellow. So it’s not a perfect match as you can see below.

Texture wise this looks and feels like a moisturizer and that’s how it swatches and applies as well. This is lightweight, blendable and despite the rich and creamy texture it wears well all day on my dry skin.

What is the shade match like?

The shade Porcelain is a good match for me but it isn’t perfect. Because of the formula I feel I can get away with it. It is a bit too yellow and when I blend it in well enough and do the rest of my makeup this looks like a spot on shade. But I wish there were more undertones and shades available as there are only 10.

When using this I apply it with my fingers (like a moisturizer) and I have found that it doesn’t play well with powder products on top. So if you want to use this, it is best to use creams on top and if you try setting it with powder it will start looking cakey.

What is the coverage like?

So this product is a bit weird and different from your usual foundations, bb creams and tinted moisturizers. Because this has properties of all three of those products. As you can see here, it has no issues covering up my redness, but it doesn’t cover everything completely.

It has a dewy finish (which I love) and a very natural, skin like vibe. It feels like putting on skincare and despite a little stickiness it feels very pleasant on the skin, but it does have a heavy citrus scent that dissipates quickly.

Should you buy the Jones Road What the Foundation Moisture Tint?

For how unique this product is, I am very happy that I got to try it and it is definitely something different: unlike anything I have tried before. However I can also see that this isn’t for everyone.

If you have oily skin, this is not for you. If you have a very particular skin tone, this is not for you with only 10 shades available. However, if you have dry skin, mature skin and you can find your shade match, this is worth a shot.

It simply marries skincare and makeup in a way I have never experienced before. I will certainly reach for it more often, especially during the colder winter months when my skin tends to need a little bit extra.
